History of Basant Panchami February 2024

According to a story, After hearing about his wife’s death kalidas was about to commit suicide by drowning himself in the river. Suddenly, a goddess saraswati appeared from the water and asked him to bathe in it. After that day his life changed a lot, he gained a special understanding of life and became a famous poet. 

Another story says that, after the lord shiva’s wife devi sati died, he went into deep meditation. But the hindu love god Kama interrupted his meditation. Because some of the wise man’s told him to wake lord shiva up, so he can get back to the world of what her wife sati has done for him. Kama agreed and shot flowers and beeswax arrows with his sugarcane bow, but lord shiva got angry and burnt him with his third eye. 

On the day of Basant Panchami, lord shiva agreed to bring back kama to life after his wife rati prayed for 40 days. Later he was born as lord krishna’s son Pradumna.

On the basant panchami people take early baths and wear yellow clothes as the yellow color is associated with goddess saraswati. Some people also keep fast for the day. After that they decorate their goddess saraswati idol with flowers and Diyas. Some visit temples to worship goddess sarswati in the hope of getting her blessings for music, creativity and wisdom.
