On December 11, electric trains will start running to transport tourists to the charming Nandi Hills, which are located around 60 kilometers from Bengaluru. This is in keeping with the South Western Railway’s (SWR) desire to increase the number of Memu (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train services that are offered between Chikkaballapur and Devanahalli.

SWR (South Western Railway) has arranged a day-long excursion along the 108-year-old heritage train route that links Bengaluru, Devanahalli, and Chikkaballapur. The itinerary encompasses exploring historical sites such as Devanahalli Fort, the Adiyogi bust at Chikkaballapur (Isha Foundation), refurbishing heritage stations, and organizing sunrise train rides at Nandi Hills.

Three heritage stations on this route have previously been renovated by SWR and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH): Doddajala, Devanahalli, and Avatihalli. According to Kusuma Hariprasad, Additional Divisional Manager (Bengaluru division), the restoration work of the Nandi halt will be finished in two months, Expert was informed. Once it’s completed, we’ll operate an early train so that visitors can witness the Nandi Hills at sunrise.”

During the tenure of Sir M Visvesvaraya as the Diwan of Mysore in 1915, the railway line that connected Devanahalli to Chikkaballapur became the first in the country to be established through private enterprise, or public-private partnership. The birthplace of Sir M Visvesvaraya is Muddenahalli, Chikkaballapur.

The electrification of the Yelahanka-Chickaballapur route was finished in March 2022, however SWR postponed the installation of electric trains on the route for a number of reasons.

“The Bhoganandishwara temple at the foothills of Nandi Hills is approximately 1.4 km from Nandi Station,” Nandi Hills resident and history buff Siddharth Raja said to Expert. It takes an additional 15–18 miles to reach Nandi Hills Peak. The lack of multi-modal public or general transportation (buses, autos, etc.) to the locations hinders any practical use of the Nandi Halt train station, whether for business or pleasure.” He suggests that the South Western Railway (SWR) focus on reducing journey time.

He claimed that the expansion of services to Chikkaballapur would also benefit farmers, students, and visitors to the 112-foot-tall Adiyogi figure at the Isha Foundation.

Bangalore to Nandi Hills Train Ticket Price

MEMU trains from various Bengaluru railway stations to Kempegowda International Airport were introduced the year prior. The Bengaluru airport express train tickets range from ₹30 to ₹35 per person, making them significantly less costly for travelers.

This is in contrast to the BMTC Vayu Vajra’s standard fee of ₹200-₹500 and taxi fares acquired through ride-hailing programs, which, depending on the location of the city, may surpass ₹2,000.

However, these trains don’t halt in locations such as Bettahalsoor, Doddajala, or Channasandra. Rail advocate Rajkumar Dugar said: “These trains should make stops at Bettahalsoor and other intermediate stops. But as no agents are prepared to staff the halt stations for the pitiful compensation of Rs 1,500 per month, SWR is not offering stoppages at these stations.
