Who was Mohammad Ghaus?

He spent most of his time in the court of Raja Ramchandra singh, the kind of Rewa. From his court, Tansen’s popularity garnered and spread across the country and the court of Akbar was not untouched with this. He also heard praises of Tansen.

Akbar requested Raja Ramchandra to send Tansen to his court to adorn the court with his musical rhymes. Akbar was so impressed with Tansen’s singing that he adorned him with the honor of one of nine gems of his court. When Tansen died was buried in Gwalior. A tomb was constructed by Akbar to honor Tansen in Gwalior, Presently known as the tomb of Mohammad Ghaus and Tansen. As both are buried in this tomb.

The tomb is adorned with beautiful walls with windows that are carved with beautiful designs. There are Two gardens on each side of the Main entrance. other two gardens are on both sides of the tomb. The entrance for the Tomb of the Mohammad Ghaus is on the opposite side from the main entrance.

The cemetery of Tansen is on the left of the main monument on a stone Platform where he is buried along with his son. There are other cemeteries as well in the backyard of the tomb. People believe that these are the cemeteries of kins and disciples of Mohammad Ghaus.

The Fable about the Tamarind Tree

There is a tamarind tree just close to the tomb of Tansen on the same platform. Tansen used to do Riyaz near this tree and he used to chew the leaves of this tree to keep his throat and voice in flow. According to the story if someone chews the leaves of this tree then their his voice becomes melodious though the original tree has collapsed due to storm.

So they have planted another new tamarind tree at the same place as tourist often ask about the tree when they read the story engraved on the stone near by.
